Colombia's electronic credit notes (Notas Crédito) and debit notes (Notas Débito) must follow the same UBL 2.1 validation process as regular e-invoices, submitted to DIAN with a CUDE code and linked to the original invoice's CUFE. Issuing manual or paper-based correction notes is no longer valid — all adjustments must be electronic and DIAN-validated.
When Do You Need a Nota Crédito?
Returns: Customer returns goods, full or partial refund Discounts: Retroactive discounts applied after invoice issuance
A Nota Crédito (credit note) reduces the value of a previously issued electronic invoice:- Returns: Customer returns goods, full or partial refund
- Discounts: Retroactive discounts applied after invoice issuance
- Price adjustments: Overcharging errors corrected
- Complete cancellation: Voiding the entire invoice (credit note for full amount)
When Do You Need a Nota Débito?
Undercharging corrections: Original invoice was below the correct amount Interest charges: Late payment interest added
A Nota Débito (debit note) increases the value of a previously issued invoice:- Undercharging corrections: Original invoice was below the correct amount
- Interest charges: Late payment interest added
- Additional services: Post-invoice additions to the same transaction
What Are the Technical Requirements?
the Technical Requirements includes: Format: UBL 2.
- Format: UBL 2.1 XML with Colombian extensions (same as regular e-invoice)
- CUDE: Unique document code generated from the note's data
- Reference: Must include the original invoice's CUFE (unique invoice code)
- Discrepancy reason: Coded reason from DIAN's catalog (discount, return, correction, etc.)
- Digital signature: XAdES-BES from the issuer's certificate
- DIAN validation: Must be submitted and accepted by DIAN before being valid
Common Correction Scenarios
Scenario 1: Partial Return
- Original invoice: COP 10,000,000 for 100 units
- Customer returns 20 units
- Issue Nota Crédito for COP 2,000,000 referencing original CUFE
- Submit to DIAN for validation
Scenario 2: IVA Correction
- Original invoice applied 5% IVA instead of correct 19%
- Issue Nota Débito for the IVA difference
- Reference the original invoice's CUFE
Scenario 3: Complete Cancellation
- Issue Nota Crédito for the full invoice amount
- Reference the original CUFE
- Both documents remain in DIAN's system (invoices cannot be "deleted")
