Foreign companies registered for Hungarian ÁFA (VAT) must comply with NAV Online Számla real-time reporting requirements for all invoices with Hungarian VAT content. The registration process requires Ügyfélkapu (Government Gateway) access, which non-EU companies must obtain through a fiscal representative. Hungary's 27% standard ÁFA rate makes compliance particularly important for cost management.

When Must Foreign Companies Report to NAV?

Hungarian ÁFA-registered: All invoices with Hungarian ÁFA must be reported to NAV Online Számla Fixed establishment in Hungary: Same obligations as Hungarian companies

    • Hungarian ÁFA-registered: All invoices with Hungarian ÁFA must be reported to NAV Online Számla
    • Fixed establishment in Hungary: Same obligations as Hungarian companies
    • Not ÁFA-registered: No NAV reporting obligation — the Hungarian buyer handles ÁFA via reverse charge

    Registration Process for Foreign Companies

    EU Companies

    1. Register for Hungarian ÁFA with NAV (can be done remotely via the EU's OSS or directly)
    2. Obtain Ügyfélkapu access through the Hungarian embassy/consulate or a Hungarian-based authorized representative
    3. Register on the NAV Online Számla portal
    4. Create technical user for API reporting

    Non-EU Companies

    1. Appoint a Hungarian fiscal representative (adóügyi meghatalmazott)
    2. The representative handles ÁFA registration and Ügyfélkapu access
    3. Representative is jointly liable for Hungarian ÁFA obligations
    4. All NAV Online Számla reporting can be managed through the representative

    Special Considerations

    Hungary's 27% ÁFA Rate

Hungary has the EU's highest standard VAT rate at 27%. This means:
    • Reporting accuracy is critical — errors on large invoices create significant ÁFA discrepancies
    • Input ÁFA recovery is substantial — ensuring buyers can access your reported data is essential for business relationships
    • Reduced rates apply to specific categories: 18% (dairy, bakery) and 5% (basic food, medicine, books, new housing)

    Currency Reporting

    For invoices in foreign currency:
    • Report the original currency amount and the HUF equivalent
    • Use the MNB (Magyar Nemzeti Bank) official exchange rate for the invoice date or the date prior
    • Both amounts must be reported in the NAV XML

How Invoicemonk Supports Foreign Companies in Hungary

Invoicemonk supports multi-currency invoicing with automatic MNB exchange rate lookup and NAV XML 3.0 generation. Foreign companies can invoice in their home currency while our system handles the HUF conversion and real-time NAV reporting.
