If you're a Malaysian small business owner, freelancer, or sole proprietor, MyInvois e-invoicing becomes mandatory for you in Phase 3 (July 2025). This guide cuts through the jargon and tells you exactly what you need to do.

Do I Really Need to Comply?

Yes. Phase 3 covers all remaining taxpayers, regardless of size.

Yes. Phase 3 covers all remaining taxpayers, regardless of size. Even if you:

    • Are a sole proprietor (Enterprise / Perniagaan)
    • Have turnover under RM 500,000
    • Are not SST-registered
    • Only issue a few invoices per month

You still need to issue e-invoices through MyInvois. The only exceptions are certain government bodies and specific categories outlined by LHDN.

    The Cheapest Way to Comply

Option 1: Use the MyInvois Portal (Free)

LHDN's portal at myinvois.hasil.gov.my is free to use:

    1. Log in with your TIN
    2. Enter your invoice details manually
    3. LHDN validates and issues the e-invoice
    4. Download or share the validated invoice with your customer

Best for: Businesses issuing fewer than 10–20 invoices per month. It's free but time-consuming — you're essentially re-typing your invoice into a government website.

Option 2: Use Invoicing Software with MyInvois Support

Tools like Invoicemonk let you create professional invoices with all mandatory fields, then either:

    • Export the data for manual submission to the portal, or
    • Use software that integrates directly via API (automated submission)

Best for: Businesses that want professional invoices and faster workflow.

What You Need Before You Start

Tax Identification Number (TIN) — get yours from LHDN if you don't have one Business registration number — your SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia) registration

    1. Tax Identification Number (TIN) — get yours from LHDN if you don't have one
    2. Business registration number — your SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia) registration
    3. MSIC code — the 5-digit code for your business activity (find it on the DOSM website)
    4. Bank account details — for payment method information on invoices
    5. Customer details — you'll need your customers' TINs for B2B transactions

    Common Worries — Answered

"I use WhatsApp to send invoices. Can I still do that?"

You can share the validated e-invoice via WhatsApp, but the source of truth must be MyInvois. Create the e-invoice through the portal or software first, get it validated, then share the validated version via WhatsApp, email, or print.

"I'm a hawker / food stall. Do I need MyInvois?"

If you're a taxpayer, yes. However, LHDN has indicated that consolidated e-invoices may be allowed for cash-based businesses — meaning you can issue one daily e-invoice summarising all transactions instead of per-customer invoices.

"My customers won't give me their TIN."

For B2C transactions (selling to individual consumers), the buyer's TIN is not mandatory. You can use a general consumer identifier. For B2B transactions, the buyer's TIN is required — and both parties benefit from the validated e-invoice.

"I only earn a little. Is there a minimum threshold?"

No minimum threshold for MyInvois compliance (unlike SST, which has a RM 500,000 threshold). If you're a taxpayer, you must comply. The MyInvois portal is free, so cost shouldn't be a barrier.

    Step-by-Step: Getting Started

Step-by-Step: Getting Started includes: Week 1: Get your TIN from LHDN (if you don't have one) and find your MSIC code Week 2: Register on the MyInvois portal and explore the interface
